Ferris Bueller’ Ferrari Sold

Ferris Bueller”
Bonhams
The replica 1961 Ferrari 250GT California Spyder was sold for $122,000.

A replica 1961 Ferrari 250GT California Spyder used in the film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” fetched $122,000 at Bonhams in London on Monday, far exceeding the auction house’s pre-sale estimate of $45,000-60,000.

The car’s Hollywood pedigree wasn’t enough to draw the top price of the day, however. That honor went to a 1938 SS Jaguar 2.5-liter Drophead Coupe, which brought over $154,000.

The auction was held in spite of volcano-related air travel restrictions in Europe that forced many prospective buyers to bid by phone. According to Bonhams, eight telephone bidders were among those in the running for the faux-Ferrari, with the winning bid coming from an American buyer.

Acura Recalling 2010 ZDX for Air Bag Problem

6:00 p.m. | Updated

Acura is recalling about 1,850 of its 2010 ZDXs because the passenger-side air bag might not deploy properly in a crash.

Acura told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the dashboard cover “may not have been properly laser scored” and would not allow the air bag to inflate properly.

The company says it is not aware of any consumers having a problem and learned of the defect from a supplier. The ZDX, which Acura calls a four-door sports coupe, is assembled in Alliston, Canada.

Recall Alert: 2010 Acura ZDX

Honda has issued a recall of about 1,850 Acura ZDX vehicles from the 2010 model year, according to the automaker.

The recall is to inspect the dashboard surface material, which may prevent the passenger-side airbag from deploying during an accident. There have been no reported incidents of this, but a manufacturinZdxg quality check found that some vehicles don’t have the proper laser-cut scoring on the underside of the material. Without this scoring, the airbag might not deploy.

Obvio 828e

aEven though it starts off looking like an April Fool's Day parody, Good Morning America had a show last week called The Future Now. This bit featured the ZAP Obvio 828 as part of a discussion on alternative fuels, networked cars and hydrogen fuel cells. Well, discussion is perhaps a bit too generous a word. The hosts, one from GMA and the other from Popular Science, briefly touched on these technologies for the early a.m. audience.

New Ferrari 599 GTO is fast

Ferrari

New Ferrari 599 GTO

There is a new supercar to replace that supercar poster on your kid's wall: it is the Ferrari 599 GTO.

Revealed by the Italian car masters online last week the 599 GTO is the "fastest ever road car" built by Ferrari.

The extreme V12 berlinetta Ferrari is good for 670 horsepower and can hit sixty in just 3.35 seconds and a top speed of 208 mph.

According to Ferrari the 599 GTO will see it's public reveal at the Beijing International Motor Show at the end of April.

Ferrari Reveals 599 GTO, Its Fastest Road Car Ever

Ferrari Reveals 599 GTO Ferrari says that its 599 GTO will be the fastest production car it has ever built.

The new Ferrari 599 GTO may not have the supercar looks of a McLaren MP4-12C or a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, but it should be right up there with those two in terms of speed and quickness.

Ferrari revealed the 599 GTO on Thursday in pictures, videos and specs over the Internet. Only a very limited number will be built. It is a homologation model for the Ferrari 599XX racecar, which has been sold to a few customers for GT competition.

“On the 599XX we have managed to make a vehicle that nobody else has ever made,” said Amadeo Felisa, the chief executive of Ferrari, in a video on the Ferrari Web site. “With structure and an architecture with the front engine, we have obtained a vehicle that nobody else will be able to equal in performance.”

2011 Ford Shelby GT350

Shelby fanatics have waited more than four decades for a new GT350. Beginning in 1965, Ford Mustang GT fastbacks rolled into the Shelby American facility near Los Angeles International Airport. Carroll Shelby and his band of racers, mechanics, fabricators, and engineers then turned them into legend. Ford took over the Shelby Mustang program for 1968, and it was all over just two years later. Ever since Ford and Shelby got back together (for the Shelby-built GT-H Hertz rental program in 2006 and the Ford SVT-produced GT500 beginning in 2007), people have asked the question: “When will the GT350 return?”
The 2011 Mustang GT 5.0 has made it possible. This Camaro fighter, packing all the design revisions and hardware upgrades of the 2010 model plus Ford’s new 5.0-liter, DOHC, all-aluminum V-8, gave today’s Shelby American (formerly Shelby Automobiles) the foundation it needed to reseed the icon. It’s white-with-blue-stripes time, all over again.

The deal to do the car at all had been an on-and-off affair for years, then happened fast. Shelby didn’t want to develop a GT350 based on existing 4.6-liter models, only to have to rework the engine package later for the impending 5.0. Everyone was on edge about the economy. And there were already plenty of specialty edition Mustangs on the 2008-09 roster, including the GT500KR and Bullitt. That air has cleared, the new powertrain has arrived, and the GT350 button was pushed late last fall.

Reinterpretation of the mid-’60s look was assigned to veteran automotive designer Larry Wood and in-house designer/development driver Vince Laviolette. Shelby American president Amy Boylan knew Wood from her tenure at Mattel, where he created numerous Hot Wheels models, including a pint-size GT350. “Amy called me,” grins Wood, “and asked me if I’d like to try doing a full-size one this time.”
