2010 VW Golf R

According to the United States auto magazine Car and Driver, the Volkswagen Golf R will be available in the US starting with 2011. Although this issue is still under serious consideration over at the German automaker, Volkswagen will most likely make the official announcement at the Detroit Motor Show that will be organized next month, according to the Car and Driver report.

The Volkswagen Golf R is equipped with a 2.0-liter TFSI power unit that is capable of outputting 266 bhp (270 PS / 199 kW) and a 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) torque. The car is available in both 3-door and 5-door body configurations and is equipped with an all-wheel drive system along with the company's proprietary 4Motion technology.

If this model will be introduced in the United States, it will open the doors for more R-badged Volkswagens, like the sexy Scirocco R – which is a front wheel drive coupe that has the same engine as the Golf R. At the moment, the only R product available in the US is the R-Line design package for the CC model. However, this package does not include any performance upgrades; it is only a trim package.

In a latest report, the officials over at Volkswagen stated that they want to reach a sales figure of 1 million units per year in the United States by 2018. By starting to deliver the Golf R as well as other R-badged Volkswagens, the German automaker will have more chances of reaching its goal.

At the beginning of this year, Volkswagen officially opened the doors for the R GmbH performance division which will create range-topping sport configurations of various VW models. At the moment, the R lineup has only the Golf and the Scirocco, but there are big chances that it will expand with models like the Jetta R or the Polo R.
