Renault Megane General Motors has today 2011

An MPV of this size is always going to be slow and heavy on the handling, but the Galaxy comes away from my test with an A for effort. It's not just the looks department where the Ford Galaxy flexes its muscle; it also has the unbelievable claim to fame that it actually provides a good standard of drive. The current market leader, the Renault Espace, looks like some kind of shoebox shaped homunculus by comparison. The sleek lines and sporty body are instantly recognisable as Ford, as though someone has inflated the Focus and jammed some extra seats in it. Obviously a vehicle as large and ungainly as a minibus is never going to look as sexy as a Porsche Carrera, but for a 7 seater MPV, the Galaxy is bordering on gorgeous.

The Ford Galaxy looks well fantastic. Just when you thought that you'd seen the last of the MPVs on the motorway with the screaming kids in the back, Ford come along and relight the fire on the charred embers of MPV dom. Add to this the fact that they aren't generally too cheap and you have a type of vehicle that is as redundant as a chocolate fireguard. The majority of families in the United Kingdom have 1-3 children, so huge 7 seater vehicles aren't really a requirement.

The poor miles per gallon ratios, the large dirty engines and the general poor performance have all but nailed the coffin shut on the very American phenomenon that are MPVs.  It can be said the genre that is Multi Person Vehicle (MPVs) is dying out.
